The 33rd Memorial of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama
This year marks the 33rd Buddhist Memorial of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. In our tradition, this milestone signifies the completion of a spiritual journey and a transition toward lasting ancestral continuity. It is a time for us to reflect on Sosai’s life and our shared responsibility to carry his legacy forward.
For this memorial, we have decided to hold a private gathering. While Sosai’s influence is felt worldwide, he remains, first and foremost, our father and the founder of Kyokushin and full-contact karate. It is always our heart’s desire to coexist with his beloved students—our brothers and sisters in the Budo sphere—and to live within the ethos Sosai left behind.
However, due to ongoing and unresolved rivalries among various groups, we believe that observing this occasion quietly is the most appropriate way to honor him. While we originally hoped for a larger ceremony, following the advice of the Head Priest, we concluded that a private observance is the most respectful way to ensure a dignified and peaceful atmosphere.
This decision is not meant to overlook the many practitioners who continue to honor Sosai alongside us.
We are deeply aware of the bond you share with his teachings, and we hold great respect for the devotion shown in his name—a devotion for which we know he is truly grateful.
Though we will observe this day privately, the global Kyokushin community remains in our hearts. We are grateful to all who honor Sosai with sincerity. Thank you for your understanding and for your continued respect for the memory of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama.
With respect,
The Oyama Family / Honbu Committee
